We
had been warned that the overland trip from Siem Reap to Bangkok was going to
be a long and arduous journey. Then we had good news and bad news. The good news
was that the road to Popet in Cambodia had been improved recently but the bad
news was stil ahead of us and I will save that until later! Photographically the
section of the route in Cambodia was the most interesting and as we only stopped
once for a short break I took a number of grab shots through the side window and
windscreen.
The
first half of the journey enabled us to see our final glimpse of Cambodian countryside
life - work in the fields - live pigs being transported upside down on the back
of a motorcycle - workmen carrying everything but the kitchen sink - different
types of housing - wayside spirit houses - and a reminder of home ....roadworks!
Finally we reached the Thai - Cambodian border at Popet. We then had to walk
with all our stuff from the Departure Area over the border to the arrival section
in Thailand. This took about an hour and could have be a lot longer on a busy
day. Then we boarded a different minibus for the last leg of our journey to Bangkok.
This was pretty well all motorway and not photogenic at all, hence no images.
There appeared to be less room in the second minibus and as its air conditioning
appeared to be almost non existent this part of the journey was not pleasant.
As conditions were somewhat cramped it became more of a possible DVT hazard especially
when we hit the Bangkok traffic and the bad news I mentioned earlier was that
there was a dispute somewhere in the centre of Bangkok and this had caused even
more traffic chaos than usual. We seemed to be stuck in the jam for hours. So
it was not the perfect end to the day.
