Day 2
December 4th -Phnom Penh
From a first glance the Tuol Prey High School built in the sixties looks an innocent location but in 1975 it was turned into a prison by Pol Pot's security forces..It was known as Security Prison 21 (S-21).It soon became the largest centre of torture in the country and between 1975 and 1978 over 17,000 victims were taken to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek.
While now birds sing in the trees surrounding the prison remnants of the original barbed wire some of which was electrified.

The above are only a small example of the many images I took in this Genocide Museum. Before prisoners from every walk of life were placed in their cells they were photographed. They slept on the floor and were shackled to iron bars.
The larger cells were used for interrogating and torturing prisoners .

There was just time to visit the Russian Market before heading off to the 'Killing Fields'.

The remains of almost 9000 people were exhumed from mass graves in the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek. More than 8000 skulls are visible behind the glass panels of the Memorial Stupa which was erected in 1988. The site is 15 km from Phnom Penh.
It's a peaceful place now as the images below show.

To end a busy day a few of the group visited the Wat Phnom on top of a 27 meter tree covered knoll.
