USA 2008 - Days 1 and 2
My next stop was Bishop Castle an extraordinary stone and iron fortress on the road (the 165) between Rye and Beulah. In the middle of nowhere you find this amazing construction built by one man - Jim Bishop.
Apparently it all started in 1959 when Jim as a 15 year old bought the piece of San Isabel forest land for 450 dollars earned by mowing lawns and delivering papers! He started work on the castle in 1972 and it is not finished yet. I met Jim while I was there and had a short chat. His political views are extreme to say the least but there is so much to admire in the the love and dedication that has gone into this awesome construction .
