The original railroad was built in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway. Jointly owned by the States of Colorado and New Mexico the 64 mile railway goes from Antonito in Colorado to Chama in New Mexico. Traveling at a height between 8000 ft and 10,000 ft the railroad has a narrow gauge track ( rails 3ft apart). If you do the full trip it will last about 6 and a half hours including lunch at Osier. You then return by coach. However I did the half trip to Osier returning by train after an excellent lunch. The railroad has been used in many films -the better known ones being Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Butch and Sundance, Missouri Breaks.
