Days
1-3
Colorado/Wyoming
Arriving
at Denver Airport at about five and grateful for a minor miracle when my case
also arrived at the same time ,the first task was to get the hire car from Alamo
and head for Boulder, my first overnight stop.
Early on Day 2 was the time
for shopping for electrical leads etc. from Radio Shack. A seven way mulit-socket
was also purchased as I had lots of stuff to plug in.
Boulder also features
an excellent camera shop too in Mikes Cameras.
The weather that morning was
not too clever, so I headed North towards Poudre Park but neither the weather
nor the autumn colours were particularly good and I took few images. Hoping for
better things in Wyoming I headed north again on r287 towards Laramie and then
r30 ( pic on left) and later the r487 heading towards Casper.
The
weather
started to clear and I had a spot of luck as a herd of cattle came down the road
so I stopped to let them pass and took the opportunity to take a few pictures.
I
was staying at the Hells Acre Motel which is next to some unusual rock formations
that were used as a background in the film 'Starship Troopers'. Alas the weather
when I arrived in the late evening and the next morning was dreadful. I took the
three images for above panorama in pouring rain and the image had to undergo some
sorting out in Photoshop. The weather forecast was not good so I had to forgo
my intention to explore the area on foot and I headed on towards Shoshoni a little
earlier than intended.
Just
up the road from Hells Acre was this sign which I just could not resist taking
a shot of. This is certainly the smallest place I have ever passed through.
When
I stopped a bit further on to decide whether to divert to Atlantic City I spotted
this spot of colour near the roadside. A curves adjustment layer in Photoshop
brought out the stormy clouds in this Dimage7 28mm shot.
Though
the cloudy conditions continued there was always a chance it might clear so I
diverted from Shoshoni south through Riverton and Lander to the ghost town , Atlantic
City. I found it a bit disappointing. The trouble is, once you have been to Bodie
in California everything else in the way of ghost towns suffer. However I was
able to get something to eat at the original Giessler Store and Post Office which
as you can see is full of souvenirs from Atlantic City's past. It was originally
built in 1893. It is now a bar and steak house.
Here
are a couple more views of the ghost town though there are people living in Atlantic
City
By
the time I had eaten the rain had just about stopped but no sign yet of the sun
as I took shots of the lovely fall colour in the hill side on the way back to
Lander.
Just
before Thermopolis is Wind River Canyon and here I stopped to take some pictures
of the river using slow shutter speeds. The above image shot using a 1/2 sec at
f9.5 with several ND filters to cut down the light. The three colour image was
done on my return in Photoshop combining three different channels from three different
images registered in PS layers.
The
swiftly moving river was a target for fishermen. I didn't manage to catch a catch
if you get my drift but the occupants of the several boats I saw appeared to be
enjoying themselves.
So
arrival in Cody in the early evening ended days 2 and 3 having driven 800 miles
shot a few films on the F4 and taken 180 digital images on the Dimage7. All pictures
shown in this section were taken on the Dimage7.
