March 2006
City 0 Wigan 1
March 18th 2006 att. 42,444
With a vital Cuptie looming on Monday and having won 7 on the trot at home a much changed City side were due for a setback and a quiet home crowd were not disappointed! This was a poor effort -one of the worst home displays for a while. City hardly had a shot on goal and the passing was almost non existent. OK so there were a number of 'reserves' on show but one would have thought they would put in the effort to get their first team places back. The ball spent a lot of time in the air and we were nearly always second to the ball. Unlike the opposition our corners were rarely dangerous and we had our first shot on target in the last minute! I can understand the managers reluctance to play certain players with the vital game with West Ham on Monday so the failure of the other squad players to pull out the stops is disappointing to say the least.
The absence of Dunne, Jordan, Musampa, Riera,Samaras, Vassell, Richards and Barton from the recent starting lineup did not inspire confidence.
Sibierski was early in action......
..... but he was soon in the wars
Filan catches under pressure
Bradley Wright Phillips given his first start goes to ground
Sibierski injured earlier is substituted by Samaras after only 26 minutes
James makes a good save from Teale only seconds after the substitution.
Samaras battles with Kavanagh
BWP gets booked for a clumsy strikers tackle on the flattened Baines and gets a telling off by his manager
Filan punches clear under pressure
A mini handbags dispute after the ball had been cleared - between Sommeil and De Zeeuw is sorted by Thatcher and Distin.
An escape for City as a corner whizzes past everybody and the first half ends goalless
Manchester City Ladies under 15 team paraded a recently won trophy at half time.
Also at half time we had a demo of ball skills.
Samaras gets another knock and he eventually got substituted in the 60th minutes by Ishmael Miller who was making his debut
The Wigan goal had a narrow escape after a mis-punch by Filan and the ball was eventually cleared off the line by Baines
The City goal under pressure at a corner
After a couple of poor successive miskicked clearances by David James the ball went for a corner.......
A fast dangerous corner is whipped in and Lee McCulloch heads in to give Wigan the lead
Bradley Wright-Phillips having been given his chance from the start made little impact on the game and once again De Zeeuw cleared
James makes a catch to thwart Scharner
The referee quickly checks to see if the player is still breathing
Mills goes in on Baines and then when booked points out that the opposing player is still moving
Miller, making his debut had few opportunities to shine
A goal down City put pressure on the Wigan goal but hardly got a shot in all game
Lee Croft shoots for goal but it flashes well wide with Miller ready to pounce
Best chance for City came in the last minute when Ireland put through Sinclair but the City players' shot is saved by Filan
Sinclair was not at his best and was well watched here by De Zeeuw
