USA 2008 - Day 17
36 miles from Willcox are the Chiricahua Mountains rising to almost 8000 ft. The wonderful forest of rocks were formed by erosion from 2,000 ft of highly silicious ash and pumice deposited by the huge Turkey Creek Volcano some 27 million years ago.
They formed towering rock spires, craggy grottoes and massive stone columns. A truly wonderful location for photography.
The Chiricahua Apaches took refuge here before the surrender of Cochise and known to them as the '"Land of Standing up Rocks". The 12000 acre area was eventually taken over by the Park Service. It is a shame it is not as well known as some of the more popular national parks. It is well worth a visit.
